Humane Solution Community Cat Program

Humane Solution’s mission is to end euthanasia as a means to control the pet overpopulation crisis. This philosophy also applies to feral cats, or community cats. Humane Solution believes that community cats should be able to live out their lives in their habitat, and that controlling their population is crucial to their health and welfare.  If you would like a printable version of the application, please click here.

Wikipedia defines a feral cat as, "an un-owned domestic cat that lives outdoors and avoids human contact: it does not allow itself to be handled or touched, and usually remains hidden from humans." Feral cats are also usually non-vocal, unresponsive to human sounds, and nocturnal. If the cat will allow you to touch it in any way and you often see it during the day, it is likely a stray cat and had human socialization at some point in their life. Our program is intended for feral cats that are part of a maintained outdoor colony.

Trap, neuter, return (TNR) is a universally recognized means of managing community cat populations. To learn more about TNR please visit Alley Cat Allies by clicking this link (https://www.alleycat.org/our-work/trap-neuter-return/).

Humane Solution can offer limited TNR services, including help with trapping, guidance, transportation and recovery, and we loan Tomahawk traps to the public for those who would like to maintain their colony. Each trap requires an $80 refundable check deposit that must be paid at the time that the traps are picked up. Please contact us at info@humanesolution.org AFTER your vet appointment is scheduled for trap loan information. Click here for our trapping instructions.

If you are willing to perform TNR and in managing a community cat colony, please answer the questions below. If you are unable to perform TNR, please state the reason on the application or email us at info@humanesolution.org about your situation.

We have contracted with Animal Health and Wellness in Rural Hall, Clemmons Vet Clinic, Cat Care Hospital in Greensboro, Boyce-Holland Vet Services, Village Way Vet, Grandview Animal Hospital, and Piedmont Communities Spay and Neuter & Wellness Clinic to provide services that include spay/neuter, vaccinations, ear tip (mandatory), flea treatment, and microchip (additional $10 optional charge). You may choose a different partner vet hospital, but those services may not be included with the voucher and you would be responsible for the extra cost.

Please note, the cats must be in humane traps for the appointments. Cats in carriers will not be accepted. We also require the cats to be kept in an indoor setting anytime they are in the trap, which includes before and after the surgery. If you have any questions regarding our program or if certain cats qualify, please contact us at info@humanesolution.org.

  • Feral cat vouchers are $35.00. Microchips for feral cats are an additional $10. You will be taken to a payment page if you successfully submitted your application.
  • Please obtain a voucher and an appointment from one of our participating vets before you trap the cat(s). Vouchers can be obtained at any time and do not have an expiration date.
  • Please do not trap the cat more than 24 hours prior to your appointment time.
